In July I shared with you the story of Mayor Dennis Donohue calling a “Fast for Peace” for the city of Salinas. I thought you would be encouraged to read this report from Daniel Ortega. Salinas Chief of Police, six weeks after the fast. Read the short report from Chief Ortega and then watch the video…
After the City of Salinas experienced 16 homicides (15 of them gang related) in the first six months of 2008, Mayor Dennis Donohue asked people of faith to fast with him for peace in our city. Many of us responded to that call and in case you haven’t noticed, there have been no homicides in Salinas since. Although that is only six weeks, I think it absolutely shows God’s response to prayer and fasting is real. We are starting the second half of 2008 much more peaceful than the beginning of the year and I will praise our wonderful, loving God for that.
Please continue praying for peace in our community. God does answer prayer!
God bless you all.
Daniel M. Ortega
Chief of Police
Salinas Police Department
Since the week of fasting, many in the faith community of Salinas have continued to fast and pray one day a week for their city. I encourage you to join with them in their prayers. While violence has decreased, it certainly has not yet disappeared from Salinas. This Labor day weekend, one week after he released the above report, while there were no homicides, there was 2 gang shootings with 5 people injured. To put this in perspective, last year over Labor Day weekend in Salinas there were 19 shootings with 16 people injured.
Next month, a team from Salinas will join us in Argentina to help us raise a canopy of prayer over California. Learn more.

Unfortunately, this weekend two of the victims of the Labor day weekend shootings died, so there has now been 18 homicides in Salinas this, 17 of them gang related. Please keep praying for the peace of God to be on Salinas.
